Backpacking Trip to Hutch's Pool
On Saturday, Kimberly and I headed down to Tucson for an overnight backpacking trip to Hutch's Pool via the Phoneline and Sabino Creek Trails.
The Phoneline Trail starts at the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. There's also a shuttle that takes visitors up to the start of the Sabino Creek Trail, but where's the fun in that? We decided to hike the full 8.6 miles from the parking lot all the way to Hutch's Pool.
The hike in was mostly uphill, with about 1,978 feet of elevation gain. Thankfully, that meant the return hike the following morning would be mostly downhill.
We found an absolutely perfect campsite right next to the water, complete with a fire ring tucked underneath a massive, cave-like boulder. There was only one other group camping near the pool, so we had plenty of peace and quiet to enjoy the surroundings.
The weather couldn't have been better. Daytime temperatures were in the low 70s, dropping into the low 50s overnight. Neither of us was cold at all, and the temperatures were just about perfect for backpacking.
After a relaxing night by the creek, we packed up the next morning and made our way back down Sabino Canyon.
Overall, this was a fantastic overnight backpacking trip! Beautiful scenery, flowing water, a great campsite, and nearly perfect weather. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relatively easy overnight backpacking adventure near Tucson.
