CDT - Day 30 - Rocks and Camp Oasis
I overslept a little this morning, after a terrible night of sleep. My campsite was very exposed, and sometime in the night the wind picked up like crazy. At one point the sand from the campsite started blowing into my tent. All I could do was roll over and wait to deal with the mess in the morning.
I skipped my usual oatmeal and just had coffee and a pop tart so that I could just out and start hiking. The hike was fantastic once I reached the most amazing rock formations. I hiked through miles of canyon sandstone formations. The height of the canyon walls exposed millions of years of sand deposits to create layers of different colors, the different layers eroded at different rates creating an alien looking landscape with caves and balancing rocks everywhere.
Luckily the weather was fantastic all day, with mostly cloudy skies, and cool temperatures.
At mile 13 of the day, I reached Camp Oasis, where I was greeted by three lovely ladies. They made me a ham and cheese sandwich, gave me brownies, sodas, coffee, chips, and some African stew, which was amazing. I could have stayed for hours but I needed to hit at least 23 miles for the day.
I saw several animals today, including a rattlesnake, jackrabbit and a pair of wild horses. One of the horses was very friendly and started approaching me, which made me a little nervous. I spoke softly to the horse and then went on my way.
